Goodbye To An Icon

Toronto lost an important man yesterday, Ed Mirvish died at the age of 92 at St. Michaels Hospital.
Mr. Ed Mirvish was a poor Jewish boy of 15 when his father died and he was forced to drop out of school to support his family. When he married his wife Anne he used $175 worth of wedding gifts and a $250 insurance pay out to start his bargain store that everyone who has been in Toronto has either visited or heard of, Honest Eds.
He was a man of the arts and brought theatre to Torontonioans in so many ways. Ed saved the Royal Alexandra Theatre from being demolished. He bought shows from all over the world including Hair, Les Miserables, and Crazy For You and staged them in what is not known as Theatre District.
Mr. Mirvish also had a heart of gold. He handed out free turkeys every Christmas and was loyal to his community, always striving for a better Toronto.
Mr Mirvish you may be gone but you light will forever shine bright both in hearts and at Bloor and Bathurst.

A lot of my families from the shelter used to go down and wait for hours for those free turkey's- for a lot of them it made their Christmas. Hopefully his family will continue to do all the great things that Ed started.
